August Target Haul

Recently, it seems like every time the kids or I wear something from Target, we get a compliment. Or a "so cute, where's that from?" I'm not saying this to toot my own horn but instead, I've decided to do a monthly "Target Haul" post. Highlighting what all I have found at my recent trips to Target and just how well dressed we can all be, on a budget.

*Don't worry, will also be highlighting the kiddos AND...the dudes!

First off, this dress is marked down to $12.48! Not to mention that right now it's buy 1, get 1 50% off on all Xhilaration clothing!

Alright ladies, SADDLE UP. The new collection from Who What Wear is INSANE. Not to mention that they have plus sizes in just about everything! This jacket is under $40 PLUS , if you have cartwheel, you get an additional 10% off. So...yeah, practically free.

I've been trying to get behind the Pajama top look for a few months now but haven't found the perfect top. Everything is either too "nighty", or frankly, so cheaply made that I break out into a sweat just trying it on. Well, Who What Wear did it again and at under $25 (plus 10% off for cartwheel believers), it was a no brainer for me.

And yeah, I will take this silky bandana scarf at under $20, while I'm at it. K, thanks.

Could not be more relieved that I passed on the EXACT Kate Spade top a few months ago. Now, I can just wear this (machine washable) cotton & lace tank! And at under $23...you don't even have to try to sell it to me. (Comes in black too...with 10% off...Is this working?)

I was on the fence about this dress but then realized that it was under $30 and so lightweight that this post-2nd baby-hot flashes having-mama needs that, real bad. Low cut in the back but not so low that you can't wear a bra. Also comes in a blue floral print

*Stay tuned for how I will transition this into the winter*

First off, y'all like my socks?! #fashionista. I found the perfect tank over the summer and I may, or may not, have purchased them in every color. Now, I found the perfect tee. Super soft cotton with a v-neck that's not "too much". Side slits makes it perfect for layering and if you are under 5' 7", you could totally wear this with leggings. Oh...and it's $14.

Lastly, the long kimono. With my height, I love a long kimono that I can throw over jeans, a dress, or leggings, and not feel like I am showing the world what the good lord gave me. Ya feel me? I will totally be wearing this with shorts (pictured) and with jeans when it gets warmer out. The perfect weight for anything, really!

Until next time, Target.

Always down for a good find

Jacket: Target // L/S Tee: GAP // Jeans: GAP // Necklace: Jennifer Zeuner // Shoes: Kate Spade

Let's face it; we've all bought clothing at Target at some point in our lives. NO one is "above" target, I don't care what you say. Some of us buy clothing there weekly and hell; even daily (guilty). However, once in a blue moon we stumble upon something that does not look like it should be hanging on the stainless steel, cold racks of Target. Case in point; this faux leather Xhilaration jacket. it has the Faux sweatshirt attached so you don't have to worry about the bulky look when you put it on. I went up a size just for length and it fits like a glove. The best $40 I've spent at target in a long time. (Well, I did just buy a killer pair of elastic waistband pants but, that's a totally different post.)

Also, to all my DIY friends out there, these shoes are Kate Spade and my daily obsession but something tells me this would be easy to replicate. I know Target has some similar cheetah print slip-on's right now and Lord knows (no pun intended) Hobby Lobby makes a mean faux leather bow. Would be curious if anyone out there has thought about replicating these on a budget.

Facing our fears

Clockwise from top left: Target // Anthropologie // Asos, similar here// Asos // Clover Canyon // Betsy Johnson // J. Crew // O'Neill // Tory Burch

Shop the post:

A few weeks ago, I had to come to terms with something all of us have had to deal with...I do not have the same 17-year-old volleyball body that I once had. Yes, I have always been fit and in shape but I don't look the same in a 2 piece like I once did. Not only that but my "pool days" are different then when I was 17. I am no longer lounging poolside, with my only obligations being to turn every 30 minutes, make sure my oil is applied evenly, and to make sure my shades are on point.  No, no. If I am not running around chasing my 2 year-old or 5 year-old niece, then I am most likely sitting in a pool drinking the day away. Neither one of these activities calls for a 2 piece.

The last one-piece I owned was the one I had to wear to swim class in High School (I later wore it for fraternity float trips as a joke, it was that bad). So the idea of looking at one-pieces made me want to jump off the nearest cliff. (thankfully, KCMO has no cliffs, whatsoever.)You can imagine then how I felt trying to find the perfect one-piece. Something that doesn't scream "look at me! I've let myself go!"

I am here to tell you, cute one-piece suits are out there! You CAN wear them and still feel good, and better yet, some of the cutest ones are the cheapest ones!

Break the rules

Tank: target // Shorts: J. Crew // Hat: Nordstrom // Sunglasses: Kate Spade // Belt: J. Crew, similar here // Shoes: Kate Spade // Bag: Louis Vuitton // Necklace: Kate Spade // Necklace: Etsy
Photography: Lauren Frisch

I remember one of the very first tidbits of fashion advice I got was "You can't wear white with white" & of course, "You can't wear black and brown together!" How many of us have had this drilled into our brains and every time we see a black and brown ensemble we cringe? As ashamed as I am to say it, it wasn't until a few years ago that I finally threw my hands up in the air and said "screw it, I'm doin' it". And I have yet to look back.

Anyone that knows me knows that I talk a big game about breaking rules but when the time comes to really say "screw it" and break the rules, I crumble and just can't get myself to do it. Unless it's circa 2004 and I feel the need to get a fake ID in order for my girlfriends and I to enjoy some Mike's Hard Lemonade on a November night. (Word to wise; don't do that. Especially if you live in Overland Park were police have nothing better to do then look for "hoodlums" like moi.) And, let's not even get STARTED on living with my boyfriend before we were even engaged. Sheesh, I'm still hearing about that one! (word to the wise; DO THIS! It makes married life so much easier!)

Now, go out and break the rules, wear white with white, Pink with red, go break a curfew and stay out 20 minutes later than you should. Play hooky for a day and get a little too tipsy on a patio. We all deserve to break the rules, every once in a while.

THE jacket.

Shorts: Levi // Clutch: Kate Spade // Bracelets: Trouve. By my beloved friend, Dee // Jacket: Kate Spade // Shoes: Converse // Hat: Target // Top: J. Crew
photography: Lauren Frisch

Normally, I wouldn't make two posts this close together but considering "THE JACKET" was just marked down 40%, I felt compelled to discuss it, yet again. I don’t think I have ever loved something so much in my closet like I do "The Dorothy Coat". Please, don't take what I say lightly when I say this jacket is everything. (And yes, that sounds like a typical sorority girl but hey, if the shoe fits…) Whenever I wear this jacket people will literally yell out their car windows asking me where I got it, and men stop me dead in my tracks to tell me how incredible this coat is.  I’ve actually had a little girl come up to me, starry-eyed, wanting to touch it.
We all know how incredibly talented Lauren Frisch is but trying to get the color right through the lens of a camera is damn near impossible. Think of the brightest Geranium flower you have ever seen (men, those are the really, REALLY, bright pink ones that you see in the summer time). I’ve always been certain that Pink, or any shade of pink, really, is a neutral color so make sure you tailor what I’m saying to your own style but, I really believe you can wear this coat with any color. I’ve worn it with a red silk blouse and blue jeans, a navy striped dress, even just white jeans with the jacket buttoned up, and obviously with cut-off shorts and converse.
Yes, this is an expensive jacket. No, I never would have purchased it if I didn’t work for Kate Spade. However, with it being on-sale (and an extra 20% off this weekend online!) makes it more affordable, and I can safely say this is a piece of art that will be in your closet forever. It’s an investment piece.

Jump around

Necklaces: Handmade Rosary from ATX // Eagle Pendant: similar here // Evil eye, similar here // Bag: Rebecca Minkoff // Scarf : Handmade // Jumpsuit: target // shoes: Forever 21, similar here

Yes, jumpers (or rompers, jumpsuits, one pieces...whatever floats your boat) are back in style for this spring and summer. Yes, YOU CAN WEAR THEM! My tips for shopping for the perfect jumper are simple:

1. Let it be roomy. I know, I know, I live by this rule a little too much when it comes to my clothes but in all seriousness, it's more flattering in jumpers when it has some room to move.
2. If you decide to venture out to a shorts style jumper, more power to you! But remember, it's a one piece so if it is tight and snug up top...it's probably going to be tight, snug, and ride up on the bottom.
3. Don't believe that in order to get a quality jumper that looks great, it has to come from a big named designer. Jumpers are everywhere right now, and if you dedicate just a little bit of time in doing some research you will most likely find exactly want you want for a lot less. (I.E. Asos, topshop, TARGET)
4. Dress it up! Throw some heels and jewels on with a simple jumper and you are set for the night, talk about an effortless outfit!

They're back

Shoes: Birkenstock // Jacket: W118 by Walter Baker, similar here // Boyfriend Jeans: Rag & Bone // Hat: Target
One trend I am THRILLED to see back this summer? Birkenstocks. Yes, "those hippie sandals". Not only are they the most comfortable sandals I have EVER owned (I think my first pair was back when I was 13) but they simply go with everything, and frankly, aren't too expensive.

I found these at DSW last weekend for close to $60 plus, DSW is always handing out coupons and deals that you could easily get them down to $50. ALSO, I was at Nordstrom Rack this weekend and saw a pair there for also $60. Be sure to check the discounted stores and, dare I say it...thrift stores before you pay more than $80 for a pair.

Until the snow stops

Skirt: Old, but similar here //Ring: House of Harlow, similar here. // Bracelets: Vintage, Stella & Dot, similar here. // Sweater: H & M Flash sale, similar here. //Hat: Target  // Booties: DV by Dolce Vita

There's something so peaceful about the snow. Especially when the entire city is shut down and the Mayor is telling you to stay inside. When the hustle and bustle of my everyday life has to stop and my one "job" is to simply watch the snow fall, it's amazing. I went outside to try and shovel and you can't even hear cars go by on the snow-packed roads. I believe it is God's way of telling us all to 'slow our roll' and just breathe.

These were clearly taken over the weekend before the foot of snow fell. Maybe if I made myself believe it wasn't THAT cold out that Spring might actually come sooner...I'm realizing now my tactic didn't work.

Repeat Offender

Tee: Kate Spade// Scarf: Nordstrom // Sweater: Rag & Bone for target// Shorts: H & M // Tights: Target// Shoes: Dolce Vita, similar here

I did it again, I went shopping in the men's department. I can't help myself. When Rag & Bone does a collaboration with Target (yes, that was 'so last year') you can't pass it up. And again, when God gives you a 60 degree day in late January, you put on your shorts and dress to impress.

Don't be afraid to shop in the men's department. The trends right now for men and women are walking a parallel line and you'd be shocked at just how similar some styles are and the drastic price difference between men and women.
